BYD plans up to R$500 million investment to expand battery production in Brazil

Chinese electric‑vehicle and battery maker BYD announced it will invest up to R$500 million in Brazil to enlarge its stationary battery‑storage capacity. The company is evaluating whether to expand its existing lithium‑iron‑phosphate battery plant in Manaus or to build a new facility elsewhere in the country. The decision is expected within three months.

The project is projected to create 300‑400 direct jobs in its initial phase and aims to increase the share of locally sourced components. BYD’s Brazilian operations already include battery production for electric buses in Manaus, vehicle assembly in Campinas (São Paulo) and Camaçari (Bahia), and a recently announced R$300 million automotive testing centre in Rio de Janeiro. The investment aligns with Brazil’s upcoming national auction for energy‑storage systems and the government’s push for greater domestic content in the sector.

BYD’s senior vice‑president in Brazil, Alexandre Baldy, described the funding as the largest announced for the country’s stationary‑storage market, positioning Brazil as a strategic partner for future clean‑energy solutions.
