BYD pursues global expansion amid Chinese EV market decline
Chinese automaker BYD is aggressively pursuing international expansion despite a cooling domestic market. In China, electric vehicle sales fell by 14 percent in the first seven months of the year, driven by reduced government subsidies and slower economic growth.
To offset domestic challenges, BYD is targeting new markets and prestige opportunities. In Brazil, the company is in advanced negotiations to acquire naming rights for the Morumbi Stadium, home of FC São Paulo. In Japan, BYD is entering the niche 'kei-car' market with its new Racco electric microcar, aiming to expand its sales locations to 100.
Additionally, BYD is exploring a potential entry into Formula 1. Vice President Stella Li has held discussions with F1 management and the FIA regarding possible cooperation or the acquisition of an existing team to bolster the company's global brand perception.
