BYD Szeged factory investment is a success for Hungary, says Péter Szijjártó

Former Foreign and Foreign Affairs Minister Péter Szijjártó has described the construction of the BYD electric vehicle factory in Szeged as a major success for Hungary. Speaking ahead of a National Security Committee meeting, Szijjártó addressed misconceptions regarding the project, stating that the government subsidies provided are within the standard range for investments of this magnitude.

Szijjártó noted that Hungary won a competitive bid against several other European nations for the factory. He also clarified that the proposed infrastructure improvements for Szeged, such as the expansion of Route 5, represent about half the value of the infrastructure investments allocated to Debrecen for BMW and other industrial projects.

Regarding the use of guest workers, Szijjártó defended the use of group framework permits, explaining they are intended to facilitate the rapid setup of high-tech facilities. He stated that under the current permit, these workers are expected to leave the country once the technology is operational, with the current permit for the Szeged site valid until mid-2027.
