BYD to announce Malaysian expansion plans within one week
Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer BYD is expected to announce its expansion plans for the Malaysian market within the next week. BYD Vice President Liu Xueliang stated that the company will soon reveal its approach toward sustainable development in the region, noting that progress has been moving well.
While Liu declined to provide specific details regarding whether BYD will establish its own production facility or collaborate with a local partner, industry interest is high. Recent discussions have involved Sime Motors, whose leadership team visited BYD headquarters in Shenzhen to strengthen collaboration and facilitate knowledge transfer. There has been speculation regarding a potential contract assembly partnership with Sime Motors at the Inokom factory in Kedah.
The announcement comes as Malaysia seeks to strengthen its electric vehicle ecosystem and encourages local investment. New regulations in Malaysia also require certain imported electric vehicles to meet specific cost and power output thresholds as tax exemptions for fully imported models are set to expire by the end of 2025.
