BYD’s European sales surge amid questions over German registration figures
Chinese automaker BYD has reported rapid sales growth across Europe. In Germany, the number of BYD cars officially registered more than tripled after the brand entered the market in December 2022, reaching 30,472 registrations. Independent analyst Matthias Schmidt found that only 18,536 of those vehicles remain on German roads, meaning roughly four out of ten have been exported, deregistered or moved to used‑car stock elsewhere. The practice, described as “window‑dressing,” shifts the financial risk of residual‑value loans onto European banks, unlike the captive‑financing models of VW, Mercedes, BMW and Stellantis.
In the United Kingdom, BYD hit 100,000 cumulative sales within three years of launching in 2023, becoming one of the fastest‑growing brands. The company now operates 143 dealership points, offers 14 models, and recorded a 36.2% month‑on‑month increase in June 2026 with 6,242 cars sold, representing 2.93% of the UK market. BYD plans to expand further with the premium Denza brand and new models such as the Dolphin S. The contrasting dynamics – impressive sales figures paired with concerns over vehicle registration and financing exposure – highlight both the opportunities and risks for BYD’s European expansion.
