BYD’s export surge makes Brazil the world’s top importer of Chinese cars
Chinese electric‑vehicle maker BYD reported July 2026 sales of 419,211 new‑energy vehicles, a 21.8 % year‑on‑year increase. Overseas deliveries of passenger cars and pickups rose to 179,841 units, up 124.3 % and representing about 43 % of total sales, underscoring export growth as the main driver of the company’s performance.
To meet its annual target of 5‑5.5 million vehicles, BYD must average roughly 530,000 cars per month for the remainder of 2026. The firm has already reached 100,000 UK sales in just over three years, with 37,995 units sold in the first half of 2026 and a 2.93 % market share. In France, Chinese cars held a 4.8 % market share in H1 2026, of which BYD accounted for 1.6 % (13,546 registrations). In Germany, only 18,536 of the 30,472 BYD cars registered since December 2022 remain on German roads; the rest have been exported or deregistered.
Brazil became the world’s largest importer of Chinese cars between January and May 2026, buying US$5.2 billion worth of vehicles, about 87 % of which are electric or hybrid. BYD alone sold 99,028 units in Brazil in the first half of 2026, achieving a 7.29 % market share and becoming the fourth‑largest automaker in the country. The rapid influx of Chinese models has also driven a sharp fall in new‑car prices in Brazil for the first time since 2020. Meanwhile, BYD’s plant in Szeged, Hungary, has been delayed to the fourth quarter of 2026 after a government probe into subsidies and tax breaks.
