BYD’s rejected Renault stake bid and its drive to overtake Toyota

Chinese electric‑vehicle maker BYD tried twice to acquire a share of France’s Renault. Both attempts were blocked by the French government, which said it must protect the national automotive champion. The refusals highlight broader concerns about Europe’s weakening auto sector and the lack of a coordinated EU industrial policy to confront growing Chinese competition.

At the same time BYD has announced an aggressive goal to become the world’s largest car producer, aiming to surpass Toyota within five years. The company cites rapid growth in its new‑energy vehicle output – 17 million NEVs produced in the first half of 2026 – and plans to expand abroad without relying on the U.S. market because of high tariffs. BYD also leaves open the possibility of acquiring European luxury brands if suitable opportunities arise.
