ByteDance ramps up AI push with $600bn investment and 2026 world‑model plan
Chinese tech giant ByteDance is overhauling its AI strategy ahead of 2026. Its internal Seed division has set four priority goals: building a "world model" that integrates vision, language and action, keeping its video‑generation models at the top of global rankings, strengthening coding capabilities for AI agents, and commercialising the Doubao chatbot abroad. The company plans to spend several hundred million yuan on world‑model data, three to four times the budget of rivals, and has recruited talent from Meta’s FAIR lab to lead 3D‑simulation research.
ByteDance’s AI ambitions are backed by a reported $600 billion market‑value increase in its secondary‑stock price. The firm is expanding its cloud platform Volcano Engine, pursuing custom AI chips, and positioning Doubao – now used by over 324 million monthly Chinese users – as a flagship consumer AI product. Analysts note the scale of the investment as a high‑risk gamble amid broader concerns about AI‑sector over‑capacity.
