The company pledged hundreds of millions of yuan for data, recruited talent from Meta’s FAIR lab, expanded its Volcano Engine cloud platform, pursued custom AI chips and positioned its Doubao chatbot—now used by over 324 million monthly Chinese users—as a flagship consumer AI product for global commercialization. The progression shows a shift from internal consolidation among the BAT firms to an aggressive, high‑risk expansion of ByteDance’s AI capabilities and market reach.
