Byzantine shipwreck discovery on Mljet Island revealed
Underwater archaeologist Igor Miholjek has presented findings from a significant Byzantine shipwreck discovered in the Tatinica bay on Mljet Island. Dating to the late 7th or early 8th century, the wreck is considered one of the most important Byzantine-era archaeological discoveries in the Mediterranean.
Recovered items include 600 grams of gold jewelry, coins, highly decorated buckles, a gold seal with imperial attributes, and a lead seal bearing the name 'Theodoros'. The site is part of a larger maritime complex that includes an ancient palace and two basilicas from the 5th and 6th centuries, suggesting the area served as a strategic shelter and trading hub for centuries.
