Ancient shipwreck discoveries in Croatia

Overview

Archaeological discoveries of ancient shipwrecks have been reported in the Adriatic Sea near Croatian islands.

In late September, findings from a Byzantine-era shipwreck on Mljet Island were revealed. Dating to the late 7th or early 8th century, the wreck contained 600 grams of gold jewelry, coins, decorated buckles, and seals, including a gold seal with imperial attributes. The site is linked to a maritime complex featuring an ancient palace and basilicas.

In mid-October, a Hellenistic shipwreck was discovered in Gnjilna Bay near the island of Vis. Preliminary dating suggests the wreck is approximately 2,300 years old, originating from the 4th or 3rd century BCE. Recovered items include a six-meter keel section, Greek pottery such as a kantharos, and a coin from the ancient city of Pharos.
