C2PA framework introduced to standardise media provenance workflows

A new technical paper released via the IBC conference introduces a standardised framework for C2PA provenance within media workflows. Developed through collaboration between CBC/Radio-Canada, Media Cluster Norway, and the International Press Telecommunications Council (IPTC), the framework aims to address fragmented implementation of content authenticity standards in newsrooms.

The framework provides a scalable tool to map the lifecycle of media assets from capture and ingest through to distribution. It identifies critical editorial decision points and vulnerabilities where metadata might be lost, offering a roadmap for organisations to combat misinformation by using content provenance signals.

C2PA, the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity, provides an open technical standard that attaches a signed record of origin and edit history to digital files. Known as a Content Credential, this record travels within images, video, audio, or documents to identify the producing camera, application, or AI model. By using cryptographic signatures, the standard ensures that any subsequent tampering is detectable, providing a verifiable history of how content was created and modified.
