C2PA standard adoption for media authenticity
Overview
News organizations are increasingly adopting the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA) standard to combat the rise of deepfakes, AI-generated content, and digital misinformation. The C2PA framework uses a cryptographic system to embed tamper-evident metadata, known as Content Credentials, into digital assets. This creates a verifiable chain of custody that records the device, location, time, and any subsequent edits made to media.
Following the initial integration of these standards by a consortium including Adobe, Microsoft, and the BBC, new technical developments have emerged to address fragmented implementation in newsrooms. A framework developed by CBC/Radio-Canada, Media Cluster Norway, and the International Press Telecommunications Council (IPTC) has been introduced to standardize provenance workflows. This framework provides a scalable method to map the lifecycle of media assets from capture through distribution, identifying critical points where metadata might be lost to ensure a verifiable history of content creation.
