Cabo Delgado faces rising violence and kidnappings

Security incidents continue to escalate in Mozambique’s Cabo Delgado province. In the Ancuabe district, a group of seven individuals armed with white weapons raided a merchant's residence in Muaguide village on September 22, 2026. The assailants reportedly tied the victim and stole approximately 28,000 meticais. During a subsequent pursuit by local forces and residents, one suspect was neutralized; however, the individual was subsequently lynched and burned by a crowd before authorities could take custody. Six other suspects remain at large.

In a separate incident in the Mocímboa da Praia district, suspected insurgents kidnapped at least six civilians from Naninili village in the Diaca administrative post. The victims, mostly men working in agricultural fields, were reportedly taken toward the Mangoma area. The kidnappings occur amidst a broader trend of rising violence in the region. According to a United Nations report, conflict-related incidents in northern Mozambique increased by 10% in the first half of 2026 compared to the previous year, with kidnappings increasingly used for forced recruitment and ransom.
