Cabo Delgado security crisis intensifies in Mozambique

Security concerns are escalating in Mozambique’s Cabo Delgado province due to both insurgent activity and misconduct by local security elements. In the coastal district of Quissanga, four fishermen have reportedly disappeared at sea. Local sources suspect they were kidnapped by Islamist terrorists, a tactic frequently used by insurgent groups for forced recruitment and extortion.

Simultaneously, residents in the Mueda district have expressed grievances against the government regarding the conduct of the Local Force. Unlike regular military and police units, members of the Local Force reportedly retain their firearms during off-duty hours. This has led to numerous criminal acts involving firearms, often exacerbated by alcohol consumption. Residents are calling for stricter regulations on weapon storage and more accountability from provincial leadership, noting a lack of official response to these rising crime rates.

According to reports from the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), security incidents in northern Mozambique have seen a significant surge, with over 70 incidents recorded in a single month. The ongoing conflict has resulted in thousands of deaths and widespread displacement across the region.
