Cabo Verde elected vice-president of African health emergency fund committee

Cabo Verde has been elected to the vice-presidency of the Monitoring Committee for the African Public Health Emergency Fund (APHEF). The election took place during a meeting organized by the World Health Organization (WHO) for the African Region in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Cabo Verde's Minister of Health, Lúcio Fernandes, will serve in this role, which carries a two-year mandate beginning in August 2026. The position is intended to help oversee the implementation and functioning of the fund, contributing to governance, transparency, and effectiveness in managing continental resources for health emergencies.

While the vice-presidency does not grant direct management of the fund's finances or automatic funding to Cabo Verde, it provides the nation with a strategic voice in African decision-making forums regarding health security, epidemic response, and regional cooperation. The presidency of the committee will be held by John Mbadi, Kenya's National Treasury and Economic Planning Secretary.
