Caborca–Y Griega highway closed after sulfuric acid spill

A tanker truck carrying sulfuric acid overturned and spilled its contents on the Caborca–Y Griega highway in Sonora, Mexico, following a collision with another vehicle. The accident occurred near kilometer 11 in the Desemboque region, causing a suspension of traffic in both directions.

Emergency responders, including firefighters, Civil Protection, the National Guard, and the Mexican Army, worked for over seven hours to neutralize the corrosive substance and clean the roadway. Preliminary reports indicate that four people were injured, with the driver suffering burns to the left arm.

To maintain mobility during the emergency, public works officials established an alternative dirt road for vehicles. Traffic was fully restored around 10:30 p.m. once the area was deemed safe by specialists evaluating the environmental and public health risks posed by the chemical.
