Chemical spills on Mexican highways

Overview

On 14 August 2026, a tanker truck overturned and spilled sulfuric acid on the Caborca–Y Griega highway in the Desemboque region of Sonora, Mexico, following a collision with another vehicle.

The accident resulted in four injuries, including a driver who sustained burns to the left arm. Emergency responders, including the Mexican Army, the National Guard, firefighters, and Civil Protection, spent over seven hours neutralizing the corrosive substance and cleaning the roadway. To manage traffic during the cleanup, officials established an alternative dirt road before fully restoring traffic once specialists deemed the environmental and public health risks resolved.
