Cadaqués opposes monk seal reintroduction project in Cap de Creus
The Cadaqués City Council has expressed strong opposition to an experimental project aimed at reintroducing the monk seal to the Cap de Creus region. The initiative, presented by the Generalitat de Catalunya’s Secretariat for Ecological Transition, identifies Cala Jugadora as a preferred site for the program.
Local authorities argue that the proposal was developed without prior consultation with the municipal administration or the affected economic and social sectors. The project involves creating a closed area affecting three coves, which would require modifying the Management and Use Master Plan (PRUG) of the Cap de Creus Natural Park to regulate maritime traffic and prohibit vessel presence.
Council members have warned that the restrictions would impact more than just maritime activities. Manel Rahola, the Councilor for Maritime Services, stated that the proposed enclosure could also restrict land access, preventing residents, hikers, and visitors from freely accessing a landscape they have traditionally enjoyed.
