CAF sanctions Zimbabwe to play matches behind closed doors
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has ordered Zimbabwe to host its upcoming international home match against Equatorial Guinea behind closed doors. This sanction follows a series of security incidents during a recent Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2027 qualifier between Zimbabwe and the Democratic Republic of Congo at the National Sports Stadium in Harare.
During the match, which resulted in a 2-1 defeat for Zimbabwe, a supporter died during a crowd crush involving a public-order vehicle and a pedestrian. Following the final whistle, fans also invaded the pitch, breaching CAF regulations. In response, CAF has temporarily suspended spectator access to all CAF matches played in Zimbabwe while safety and security protocols are reviewed and verified.
The Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) has also been fined. Information Minister Zhemu Soda confirmed the decision, noting that the suspension remains in place until further notice to ensure the maintenance of safety standards at competition venues.
