CAF sanctions regarding Zimbabwe stadium safety
Overview
Following a fatal crowd crush and pitch invasion during an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier between Zimbabwe and the Democratic Republic of Congo, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) imposed sanctions on Zimbabwe. The incident, which occurred at the National Sports Stadium in Harare, involved a supporter dying during a crush involving a public-order vehicle. As a result, CAF ordered that Zimbabwe’s upcoming match against Equatorial Guinea be played behind closed doors and fined the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA).
Subsequently, CAF granted ZIFA conditional permission to admit up to 10,000 spectators to the National Sports Stadium for two specific matches in October: a women’s Olympic qualifier against Malawi and a CAF Champions League club tie. These matches will serve as tests under strict security monitoring to determine if larger crowds can eventually return to the venue.
