Cainz launches AI-driven plastic recycling pilot in Shizuoka
Cainz has launched a new demonstration project for plastic resource circulation, known as the ‘Plaricru (Kakegawa Model)’, in collaboration with Kakegawa City, Veolia Generates, Kino Kankyo, and Trash Lens. The pilot runs from September 14 to December 13, 2026, at the Cainz Kakegawa and Daito stores in Shizuoka Prefecture.
The project utilizes AI and digital technologies to improve convenience for citizens while reducing the operational burden on stores and operators. Key features include an AI-driven identification function that allows users to check if an item is eligible for collection before bringing it in, and an unmanned reception system where registered users can unlock collection storage via a LINE mini-app.
These technological advancements allow the range of collectible items to expand from nine categories in the previous year to approximately 50. Additionally, the system enables daily collection during specified hours rather than being limited to specific days. Remote monitoring via cameras and image recognition technology is also being used to track collection status, further reducing manual labor requirements.
