Caio Martins Stadium to become park and flood reservoir in Niterói

The Caio Martins Stadium in Niterói will be transformed into a municipal park and a large-scale drainage reservoir. The Rio de Janeiro State Government has officially ceded approximately 25,000 square meters of the sports complex to the Niterói City Hall to facilitate this project.

The primary goal of the intervention is to mitigate chronic flooding in the Icaraí, Santa Rosa, and Largo do Marrão neighborhoods, an issue that has persisted for over 50 years. The project includes the construction of an underground reservoir with a capacity of 80 million liters beneath the current football field, along with six kilometers of new drainage networks and galleries.

Once the reservoir is completed, the area previously occupied by the field will be converted into a municipal park featuring sports spaces, leisure areas, and community zones. Construction is expected to begin later this year and is estimated to take approximately 18 months.
