Niterói urban resilience and flood mitigation projects

Niterói is pursuing large-scale urban resilience and infrastructure projects to address local governance and environmental challenges.

In late August, the city began negotiating a US$ 70 million urban resilience project with the Development Bank of Latin America and the Caribbean (CAF). This proposal involves the creation of a Resilience and Intelligent Operations Center, though formal financing approval and specific funding breakdowns remained unconfirmed at that stage.

Following these discussions, the Rio de Janeiro State Government officially ceded 25,000 square meters of the Caio Martins Stadium complex to the Niterói City Hall. This land will be used to mitigate chronic flooding in the Icaraí, Santa Rosa, and Largo do Marrão neighborhoods. The plan includes constructing an underground reservoir with an 80-million-liter capacity and six kilometers of new drainage networks. Once the drainage works are complete, the site is intended to be converted into a municipal park featuring sports and leisure areas.
