Brazilian bank workers approve 24-hour strike over salary disputes

Bank workers across Brazil have approved a 24-hour strike scheduled for August 20 following the rejection of salary and benefit proposals by the National Federation of Banks (Fenaban). In various assemblies, workers overwhelmingly rejected Fenaban's suggestions, which included freezing entry-level salary floors and implementing tiered salary adjustments. Key demands from the unions include real wage increases, improved profit sharing (PLR), better meal and food vouchers, and the establishment of a salary floor for IT professionals.

Negotiations at major institutions have also faced significant friction. At Caixa Econômica Federal, employees have rejected a new health plan funding model that would increase monthly contributions and raise the cap on family expenses from 7% to 12% of the base salary. Meanwhile, Banco do Brasil has indicated it does not expect to launch a new public recruitment process in 2026, opting instead to focus on internal team restructuring and the creation of specialist roles.

The labor movement highlights the contrast between worker demands and the sector's financial performance, noting that the banking industry recorded profits exceeding R$ 124 billion in 2025.
