Calabar flooding causes deaths and widespread property destruction
Severe flooding in Calabar, the capital of Cross River State, has resulted in the deaths of at least five residents and widespread destruction of property and livelihoods. The flooding occurred in the early hours of a morning in July, catching many families by surprise as water surged into homes in areas such as Webber, Calabar South, and Ikot Awatim.
Survivors reported losing essential household items, including furniture, appliances, and clothing. One resident, Etim Bassey, described the water rising to his neck as he attempted to carry his five-year-old son to safety, estimating his personal losses at over N5m. Affected residents have appealed to state and federal emergency agencies for assistance to recover from the loss of years of savings and possessions.
