Flooding and landslides in Calabar, Nigeria

Overview

Heavy rainfall in Calabar, Cross River State, has triggered devastating floods, landslides, and soil erosion. Initial reports indicated that at least ten people were killed, including a father and four siblings buried by a landslide in Ikot Anwatim, as well as several individuals who drowned. The destruction included the loss of numerous homes and damage to critical infrastructure, such as the road to the Naval Base and Calabar Jetty.

As the weather persisted, the situation escalated to include structural collapses and growing ravines. On August 13, 2026, the UNICEM Hospital building collapsed into a gully due to ground erosion; while video footage showed the structure becoming unsupported before falling, there has been no official confirmation regarding casualties from this specific incident. In the Peaceland community, residents reported life-threatening flooding and the formation of a ravine consuming homes, forcing some to relocate. Local attempts to mitigate erosion using bamboo and discarded tires have proven unsuccessful.

Further flooding in July caused the deaths of at least five residents as water surged into areas such as Webber, Calabar South, and Ikot Awatim. Survivors reported the loss of essential household items, with some residents, such as Etim Bassey, estimating personal losses exceeding N5m. Affected residents have appealed to state and federal emergency agencies for assistance to recover from the loss of possessions and savings.
