Calabar hospital collapses and homes lost to landslides and erosion

Heavy rainfall and soil erosion have caused significant destruction in Calabar, Cross River State. On August 13, 2026, the UNICEM Hospital building collapsed into a gully after the ground beneath it was washed away. While video footage showed the structure becoming unsupported before falling, there has been no official confirmation regarding casualties or injuries.

In the Peaceland community, residents are facing life-threatening flooding and a growing ravine that is swallowing homes. Some residents have already been forced to relocate, while others remain in precarious positions near the eroding edges. Community members have attempted to mitigate the erosion by planting bamboo and using discarded tires to reinforce the ravine, but these efforts have failed to stop the water's force. Residents have expressed urgent pleas for government intervention as the risk of further property loss increases with continued rainfall.
