Calabria council approves measures against labor exploitation and free health surveillance

The Calabria Regional Council debated and approved two separate motions. One, driven by Fratelli d'Italia councillor Daniela Iiriti, condemned the prevalence of caporalato (illegal labour exploitation) in the region and called for stronger inspections, certification of lawful employers and a joint effort across political lines to combat the practice.

In a separate unanimous vote, M5S councillor Elisabetta Barbuto, who disclosed her own battle with cancer, secured approval for extraordinary free health surveillance for residents of the Crotone‑Cassano‑Cerchiara National Interest Site. The motion mandates periodic medical checks, toxicology testing and stronger monitoring of industrial waste to protect vulnerable groups such as children, pregnant women and the elderly.
