Calabria enhances healthcare through policy summit and new cardiac surgery unit

Calabria is advancing its healthcare infrastructure through both strategic policy discussions and new clinical services. The MedSalute 2026 conference, promoted by the Calabria Region, Motore Sanità, and FIASO, will bring together institutions, hospital managers, and scientific professionals to address the future of healthcare in Southern Italy. The event focuses on sustainability, technological innovation, waiting list management, and mental health, aiming to create concrete proposals for the eight regions of the Mezzogiorno.

Simultaneously, the Calabria Region has announced the operational launch of a new cardiac surgery department at the Ospedale dell’Annunziata in Cosenza. This facility includes three operating rooms—one of which is a hybrid suite—a thoracic surgery room, and 22 beds, including six in intensive care. To support the unit, 88 professionals have been recruited, including 10 cardiac surgeons. The department aims to perform approximately 400 interventions annually, reducing the need for patients to travel outside the region for specialized cardiac care.
