Calabria faces nephrology staff shortages, jeopardizing dialysis and transplant care
The Nephrology Association (ANED) warned that Calabria's dialysis and transplant services are under severe strain due to a critical lack of nephrologists and nursing staff, especially in the provinces of Cosenza and Vibo Valentia. Outdated facilities and failing water‑treatment plants further hinder safe patient care. ANED criticised the regional health department for inactivity and demanded immediate action from Regional President Roberto Occhiuto, alleging that patients are being moved between centres under unsafe conditions.
The association called for urgent measures, including staffing boosts and modernization of dialysis units, to avoid a humanitarian disaster for kidney patients in the region.
