Calabria launches cross‑peninsula cycling route linking Tirreno and Ionian coasts

On Saturday 18 July, Calabria hosted the regional Festa degli itinerari, a celebration of hiking, protected areas and cycle tourism. The event, titled “Lì dove l’Europa si restringe”, introduced a new cycling‑pedestrian corridor that will connect the Regional Marine Park Costa degli Dei on the Tyrrhenian side with the Regional Marine Park Baia di Soverato on the Ionian side, crossing the narrow Marcellinara Isthmus.

The 30‑km itinerary starts in Soverato, passes the conservation zones of the Scogliera di Stalettì and the Oasi di Scolacium, cuts across the Isthmus, and reaches the Dune dell’Angitola and the La Vota Lakes on the Tyrrhenian coast. Officials highlighted the project's aim to combine environmental protection with local economic growth, creating a “slow‑tourism” network that links coastal towns with inland villages. Regional Environment Minister Antonio Montuoro and Tourism Minister Giovanni Calabrese stressed the importance of integrating natural reserves into accessible tourism routes for future generations.
