Calabria leverages slow‑food tourism to revive its rural economy
Calabria has long struggled with depopulation, an aging population and low GDP per capita, prompting a net loss of about 7,000 residents in 2025. To counter these trends, the region is promoting a model that pairs slow‑food and sustainable tourism, linking visitors directly with local producers of food and wine. Angela Donato, founder and president of the Calabria Food Fest, says travelers increasingly seek authentic experiences, and that this approach creates new economic opportunities for rural communities.
The initiative is complemented by a broader push to showcase Calabria’s interior attractions – historic hill towns such as Gerace, Stilo, Civita and Pentedattilo, as well as forests and mountain trails – encouraging visitors to explore beyond the crowded beaches and support the local cultural and natural heritage.
