Calabria agrifood and rural economic revitalization
Overview
Calabria is implementing economic revitalization strategies centered on its agrifood and sustainable tourism sectors to combat depopulation and low GDP. The region faced a significant demographic challenge in 2025, recording a net loss of approximately 7,000 residents.
To counter these trends, the region is promoting a model that pairs slow-food and sustainable tourism, linking visitors directly with local food and wine producers. Angela Donato, founder and president of the Calabria Food Fest, noted that travelers increasingly seek authentic experiences, which creates new economic opportunities for rural communities. This initiative encourages exploration of the interior, including historic hill towns such as Gerace, Stilo, Civita, and Pentedattilo, as well as mountain trails and forests.
Developments have highlighted the increasing role of youth and women in agrifood entrepreneurship. Italian Labor Minister Marina Elvira Calderone observed that many young professionals are choosing to stay in or return to Calabria to develop business projects that blend traditional gastronomic practices with research, technology, and innovation.
In the Vibo Valentia area, the ‘Distretto del Cibo’ (Food District) recently made its public debut in Spilinga during a celebration of the traditional ‘Nduja di Spilinga.’ Led by Luisa Caronte, the agency aims to support local supply chains including meat, oil, wine, and dairy. Additionally, initiatives like the Naturium project in Montepaone have focused on food education, emphasizing the importance of traceability and nutritional value in products such as organic extra virgin olive oil.
