Calabria migrant worker deaths expose exploitative labor system

Four migrant laborers – Waseem Khan, Amin Fazal Khogjani, Ullah Ismat Qiemi and Safi Iayjad – died when a van transporting them to agricultural fields in the Sibari plain caught fire, killing all aboard. The tragedy underscored the widespread caporalato network that exploits roughly 7,000 foreign workers in the region's harvest cycles. Local growers and unions, including Coldiretti Calabria, called for stricter controls and fair supply‑chain practices to protect vulnerable workers and prevent further loss of life.
