Calabria launches pilot project offering free housing to combat depopulation

The Calabria region in Italy has launched a pilot project titled “Ripopola Calabria” (Repopulate Calabria) to combat demographic decline in small villages. The initiative offers 50 unused municipal properties to individuals who do not currently reside in the region but are willing to move their permanent residency there.

Under the program, the regional government will fully fund the renovation and restoration of these homes. Selected applicants will be granted the right to live in the properties free of rent for a period of ten years. The project is funded through the 2021–2027 Development and Cohesion Plan.

To qualify, applicants must have resided outside of Calabria for at least three years. The homes are strictly for residential use and cannot be sublet or used for tourism. Assignments will be determined through public rankings, with preferential criteria for young couples, families with children, remote workers, professionals in the cultural sector, and people with disabilities.
