Calabria Offshore Earthquake of Magnitude 6.2 Felt Across Southern Italy and Greece

A deep offshore earthquake was recorded on the night of 2 June 2026 about 30 km off the coast of Amantea in Calabria. The INGV estimated the magnitude at 6.2 (later adjusted to 6.1) with a focal depth of roughly 250 km.

The tremor was widely felt throughout southern Italy—including Cosenza, Catanzaro, Lamezia Terme, Reggio Calabria, Sicily’s Messina and Catania, Basilicata, Puglia—and even on the Greek coasts. Thousands of residents reported the shaking, prompting a surge of calls to fire and civil‑protection services. INGV seismologists explained that the quake was generated by the subduction of the ionian lithosphere beneath the Calabrian Apennines, a mechanism known to produce strong, deep events in the region. Historical comparators such as the 1743 Amantea quake were cited, and INGV announced plans to expand submarine seismic monitoring.
