Overview

Seismic activity across southern Italy has persisted since late May 2026, with a series of shallow tremors, a deep offshore magnitude‑6.1‑6.2 quake on 2 June, and swarms around the Campi Flegrei volcanic complex. On the night of 24 July a magnitude‑4.1 event near Pizzone in Molise caused residents to flee homes but resulted in no injuries or damage. The most significant shock occurred on 31 July/1 August when a shallow magnitude‑4.7 earthquake struck the Campi Flegrei caldera near Pozzuoli, the strongest in four decades. The tremor triggered landslides and a partial hillside collapse in Pozzuoli, crushing parked cars and damaging buildings. Twenty‑six people were lightly injured, five of whom required hospital care. About 300 residents – roughly 120 families – were evacuated; many spent the night in cars or public squares while emergency shelters were set up in Pozzuoli, Naples and nearby sites. Firefighters rescued occupants trapped in elevators and cleared a multi‑storey block housing around 70 people. Power outages affected roughly 100,000 households and a pier in Pozzuoli was declared unsafe, halting ferry services to the islands. The commercial port was inspected, found only superficially damaged and reopened the following morning. More than 100 aftershocks followed, and civil‑protection, ACER Campania and regional authorities continue to monitor the fault zone and the ongoing seismic swarm.
