Calabria tourism growth sparks debate over regional development

Regional authorities and labor organizations in Calabria are debating the impact of rising tourism figures on the local economy. Giovanni Calabrese, the regional minister for Tourism, Labor, and Economic Development, asserts that the region is not in crisis, citing significant growth in tourism indicators.

According to official data cited by Calabrese, tourist arrivals increased by 7.5% in the first seven months of 2025, with foreign presence rising by 28.5% according to Bank of Italy records. Furthermore, regional airports surpassed four million passengers, marking a 21% increase over 2024. Data from the Ministry of Tourism also indicates a substantial rise in arrivals for May 2026 compared to the previous year.

However, the Filcams Cgil Calabria union has challenged this narrative, arguing that increased arrivals do not necessarily equate to regional development. The union expressed concern that while tourism numbers rise, local residents continue to migrate to northern Italy due to a lack of jobs and sufficient wages. They also highlighted a growing disparity in purchasing power, noting that high costs in tourist hubs like Tropea may eventually make these areas unaffordable for the local population.
