Calabria towns protest caporalato after murders of migrant workers

On 6 June 2026, a large demonstration took place in Amendolara, Calabria, condemning the practice of caporalato and the political structures that enable it. Organisers highlighted the recent killings of four migrant labourers—Waseem, Amin, Ullah and Safi—and denounced the harsh working conditions, negligible wages and systemic exploitation that affect agricultural workers in the region.

The protest called for stronger labour protections, stricter enforcement of existing laws and a review of immigration policies that tie residence permits to low‑pay contracts. Participants blamed outdated legislation, such as the legacy of the Bossi‑Fini law, for perpetuating a system that criminalises migrants and leaves them vulnerable to abuse and fatal accidents.
