Calabria transport projects face scrutiny and revival efforts

Consumer association Codacons has submitted preliminary observations on the “Autoporto Verde” project in Villa San Giovanni, highlighting missing documentation, design contradictions, and financial, environmental and safety concerns. The group questions the origin and allocation of residual funds amounting to €8.275 million, arguing they remain tied to emergency measures and cannot be freely used for the new components such as a wellness path, amphitheatre, pedestrian walkway, urban parking and sport or commercial activities.

Provincial councillor Antonio Uva has tabled a motion in the Cosenza provincial council requesting the reinstatement of the “Aeroporto della Sibaritide” project into the Regional Transport Plan. The motion calls for renewed technical, economic‑financial and environmental feasibility studies and proposes a coordinated institutional table involving regional, municipal and economic actors to assess the airport’s potential to boost tourism, agri‑food and logistics in the Ionian area.

Both initiatives reflect ongoing debate over the development of major transport infrastructure in Calabria, with civil society demanding transparency and officials seeking to revive projects deemed strategic for regional growth.
