Calabria unions demand safer farm work after Amendolara murders

On 5 June, CISL Calabria and its agricultural branch FAI CISL organized a conference in Cirò to reinforce safety, legality and dignity in the regional agricultural sector. The event, attended by union leaders, local officials and industry representatives, was framed by a minute of silence for the four immigrant farm workers brutally killed in Amendolara.

Union delegates presented a "Regional Pact for Safe and Quality Agricultural Work" proposing measures such as improved transport for workers, dispersed housing models, tighter inspections and incentives for companies that respect labour rights. They called for activation of the SILCA program to combat caporalato and exploitation, and met with the Prefect of Cosenza and President of Calabria, Roberto Occhiuto, to discuss the proposals. The meeting also highlighted the growth of Calabria’s viticulture, citing the Merano Wine Festival’s visit to the area as a sign of renewed international interest.

The unions pledged continued action in institutions and workplaces to protect workers and enforce legal standards in the agro‑food sector.
