Sicily and Calabria Wildfires Accelerate Amid Heat Wave

Since Saturday, more than 1,000 forest and vegetation fires have erupted across Sicily, driven by temperatures exceeding 45 °C, extreme dryness and strong southerly winds. The fires have forced the evacuation of over 100 residents and 22 patients from a clinic in Santo Stefano Quisquina, but no casualties have been reported. Italian fire services have deployed water‑bombing aircraft, Canadair, ground crews, and volunteers, while road sections around Monreale have been closed for safety.

In Calabria, the heat wave has triggered dozens of vegetation fires; over 200 interventions were recorded in the past 36 hours, with 26 incidents still active. Regional union leaders and the regional civil protection agency have called for a shift from emergency‑only responses to a permanent prevention plan, increased staffing, and expanded drone monitoring. The civil protection director, Domenico Costarella, disclosed that investigators found "cats tied to their tails and soaked in flammable liquid" among the arson devices, prompting the animal‑rights group AIDAA to announce a €1,000 reward for information leading to convictions.

Municipalities such as Monreale have activated emergency operation centres to coordinate police, fire, civil‑protection and volunteer units. Political figures have debated the severity of the situation, with some accusing opponents of exploiting the crisis, while authorities stress the need for a zero‑tolerance stance against deliberate arson.
