Italy heatwave peaks, red alerts stay

Overview

Mid‑July 2026 remains dominated by the third Saharan‑driven anticyclone over Italy. Red‑alert levels now cover 15‑16 major cities, including Rome, Milan, Bologna, Florence, Turin, Palermo and Cagliari, with temperatures forecast up to 46 °C in Sardinia and near‑45 °C in Sicily.

Health authorities continue to advise vulnerable groups to stay hydrated, avoid midday sun and use cooling centres. Municipalities have introduced new safeguards: Enna (Sicily) bans outdoor work from 12:30 to 16:00 in agriculture, construction and related sectors, requiring shade, water and break provisions; Cagliari closes parks and cemeteries for two days.

The extreme heat has spurred novel adaptations beyond Italy. Museums, galleries and retailers in several European cities are shifting opening hours to evenings, creating a nascent “nocturnal tourism” to protect visitors from daytime heat.

Agricultural losses are worsening. Coldiretti reports extensive damage to fruit orchards, vineyards and cereals across Emilia‑Romagna, Lombardy, Trentino and the Marche, with maize yields in parts of the Mantua plain projected to fall by up to 80 %. Severe storms on 15 July damaged hundreds of hectares, prompting calls for urgent water‑storage projects and drought‑resistant crops. Reservoir levels stay critically low and the Po River flow remains below zero.

Wildfire danger stays acute, with red fire‑danger alerts in Catania and heightened risk across central and southern Sicily. Relief is not expected until a northern front brings modest cooling from 18 July and rain after 20 July.

Animal‑welfare measures continue, including restrictions on outdoor exposure of pets in Catania.
