Italy weather shift: Record heatwave ends with severe storms
Overview
The prolonged heatwave in Italy has officially ended as an intense Atlantic disturbance brought a significant shift in weather patterns. This transition marks the conclusion of a summer classified as the hottest on record, surpassing the 2003 season. In Milan, temperatures had previously reached or exceeded 35°C on 35 separate occasions.
The arrival of the cold front triggered orange alerts from the Civil Protection Department for several regions, including Liguria, Emilia-Romagna, Lombardy, and Veneto. These warnings addressed risks of intense thunderstorms, heavy rainfall, and hydrogeological hazards such as landslides and flash floods. In Liguria, Arpal issued specific orange alerts to manage the risk of persistent, intense storms.
By mid-September, the weather disturbance moved across the Mediterranean, bringing heavy rainfall and localized flooding. In Rome, some areas recorded over 100 mm of rain, while intense storms in Central and Northern Italy caused damage including fallen trees. The cooling trend has expanded from the north toward the south; while subtropical heat persists in some southern areas, a cold front is expected to bring scattered showers and temperature drops to Campania, Basilicata, Puglia, and Sicily. Meteorologists have noted that high Mediterranean Sea temperatures may provide additional energy to these storm systems, potentially leading to irregular and intense precipitation patterns as the country returns to seasonal norms.
