Calabria wine sector faces climate shifts amid quality growth

The wine industry in Calabria is experiencing a period of qualitative growth alongside significant environmental challenges. The region has seen success with indigenous varieties, evidenced by six ‘Tre Bicchieri 2027’ awards from Gambero Rosso for wines such as Cirò, Greco, and Zibibbo Secco.

However, climate change is fundamentally altering viticulture. Rising temperatures and drought are accelerating the vegetative cycle, leading to increasingly early harvests across Italy. While this shift presents logistical challenges and risks such as water stress in non-irrigated vineyards and soil erosion, many producers are pivoting toward a strategy of higher quality and selection over quantity.

To mark ten years of the ‘Vicoli diVini’ event, a commemorative gathering will be held in Vibo Valentia. The event aims to reflect on the evolution of the regional wine sector, including the growth of local companies, the increasing value of indigenous grape varieties, and the ability to promote Calabrian territory through its wine production.
