Calabria's economy grows as new air routes expand tourism

The 38th report of the Confartigianato Calabria Observatory shows the region’s GDP rose 0.8% in summer 2026, outpacing the national average of 0.5% and the southern Italy average of 0.7%. The growth is driven mainly by self‑employment (+18.1%) and female employment (+4.3%). However, inflation remains the highest in Italy at 3.9% and credit costs are steep, with interest rates for micro‑ and small firms reaching 10.5%, the nation’s highest. Unemployment fell to 8.6%, and businesses expect to hire about 46,000 workers between June and August, the strongest increase among Italian regions.

At the same time, Calabria is expanding its air connectivity. Lamezia Terme Airport added routes to Bratislava, Budapest, Saarbrücken, Sofia and Warsaw. Reggio Calabria’s Tito Minniti Airport introduced flights to Parma and Milan Bergamo and boosted frequencies to Milan Malpensa, Torino and Venezia. Crotone’s Sant’Anna Airport opened a new link to Milan Malpensa and increased services to Milan Bergamo and Bologna. The broader network is intended to attract more tourists year‑round, supporting the region’s economic diversification beyond the traditional beach season.
