Municipalities in Latin America face various corruption and administrative investigations
Various municipal administrations across Latin America are facing legal scrutiny and investigations regarding financial and administrative irregularities.
In Argentina, Marcelo Román, the mayor of Allen, has filed a complaint against officials and council members following a five-day interim period where an acting mayor allegedly received a 1.5 million peso salary advance. In Comodoro Rivadavia, Infrastructure Secretary Fernando Ostoich appeared before prosecutors to defend his management against allegations from an opposition council member. Additionally, former mayor Julio César Garro is under investigation for a suspected real estate illicit association, with authorities lifting fiscal secrecy to examine his assets.
In Paraguay, the Comptroller General has launched an examination of Asunción councilman Augusto Wagner’s assets following reports of significant wealth growth between 2016 and 2021. Separately, allegations of “parallel cash boxes” have been raised against the Consumer Defense Directorate in Asunción involving suspicious private bank transfers.
In Chile, the Director of Municipal Works in Calama has been removed from his duties pending an administrative inquiry into irregularities in building permit processes. In Peru, the Comptroller identified a case in Cocachacra where a sub-manager was hired using an allegedly falsified university diploma, and in Alto Selva Alegre, an infrastructure project was flagged for omitting essential inspection manholes from its technical files.
In Spain, the former mayor of Cádiz, José Manuel González ‘Kichi’, faces prosecution for alleged prevarication and breach of secrecy regarding the employment of an unauthorized political advisor.
