Trinamool Congress denied relief by Calcutta High Court over frozen bank accounts

The Calcutta High Court has declined to grant interim relief to the Trinamool Congress (TMC) regarding four additional bank accounts frozen by the West Bengal Police. These accounts are reported to hold approximately ₹804 crore.

The legal dispute involves allegations of financial irregularities and the unlawful routing of funds, leading to investigations by the Cyber Crime Police Station and the Enforcement Directorate under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act. The TMC argued that the freeze on these accounts, which includes primary operational funds and fixed deposits, would paralyze the party’s functioning.

Justice Saugata Bhattacharya ruled that the party’s essential needs are already addressed by a previous July 9 arrangement. Under that order, a court-appointed Special Officer supervises certain accounts to cover the party’s day-to-day expenses. The court noted that granting further permission to operate these additional accounts could undermine the existing supervised framework. The matter is scheduled for further hearing after the Durga Puja holidays.
