Calgary mayor announces planned Bearspaw water main shutdown

Calgary Mayor Jeromy Farkas has announced a planned shutdown of the Bearspaw feeder main for less than one week in September. The closure is intended to facilitate electrical work on a new pumping station as part of the north Calgary water servicing project.

The Bearspaw feeder main is a critical piece of infrastructure, providing 60 per cent of the treated water for 1.6 million residents in Calgary, surrounding municipalities, and the Tsuut’ina Nation. This follows previous pipe failures in June 2024 and December 2025 that led to long-term water restrictions.

Mayor Farkas noted that the shutdown is planned work and not due to water shortages. However, residents may be asked to implement outdoor watering restrictions depending on weather conditions and water usage levels at the time. He indicated that any necessary restrictions should be easier for residents to manage than previous mandates.
