Calgary water infrastructure maintenance
Overview
Calgary Mayor Jeromy Farkas has announced a planned shutdown of the Bearspaw feeder main for less than one week in September. The closure is intended to facilitate electrical work on a new pumping station as part of the north Calgary water servicing project.
The Bearspaw feeder main provides 60 per cent of the treated water for 1.6 million residents in Calgary, surrounding municipalities, and the Tsuut’ina Nation. This maintenance follows previous pipe failures in June 2024 and December 2025 that resulted in long-term water restrictions. While the Mayor noted the shutdown is planned work rather than a response to shortages, residents may face outdoor watering restrictions depending on weather and usage levels.
