Calgary police charge 16 people in South Asian community extortion probe

Calgary police have charged 16 individuals in connection with a large-scale extortion investigation targeting the city’s South Asian community. The charges involve a total of 56 offences, including threats, intimidation, and violence.

Investigators have identified 49 extortion-related incidents across Calgary, 19 of which involved shootings. Police allege that criminal networks used shootings targeting homes and vehicles to pressure victims into making payments. Most of the accused are Indian nationals of Punjabi origin living in Canada on work or student permits; none are Canadian citizens.

Superintendent Jeff Bell released photographs of 15 of the men to assist in identifying associates and aliases used by the suspects. While one accused remains in custody, the others have been released on bail. Police noted that similar patterns of extortion have been observed in other Canadian cities with significant South Asian populations.
